Control Strategy of Hybrid Electric Vehicle with Double Planetary Gear Sets

2015-04-14
2015-01-1216
Hybrid Electric Vehicles with a power split system provide a variety of possibilities to promote the fuel economy of vehicles and better adapt to various driving conditions. In this paper, a new power split system of a hybrid electric bus which consists of double planetary gear sets and a clutch is introduced. The system is able to decouple both the torque and speed of the engine from the road load, which makes it possible for the engine to operate on its optimal operation line (OOL). Considering the features of the system configuration and bus driving cycle, the driving mode of the bus is divided into Electric Vehicle (EV) mode, Electric Variable Transmission (EVT) mode and Parallel mode. By controlling the engagement of the clutch at high vehicle speed (after the mechanical point), the system operates in the parallel mode rather than EVT mode. This avoids the problem that the system efficiency sharply declines in high speed region which EVT configurations are generally faced with.

2007-01-4209
This paper developed a control system for the auxiliary power unit (APU) in off-road series hybrid electric special vehicle. A control system configuration was designed according to the requirements of the high voltage system in series hybrid electric special vehicle. Then optimal engine operating areas were defined. A gain scheduling engine speed PI controller was designed based on these areas. A closed loop voltage regulator was designed for the synchronous generator. The proposed control system was first validated on an APU control test bench. The test results showed the control system guaranteed the diesel APU good dynamic response characteristics while remaining stable output voltage. Finally, the APU control system was implemented on a diesel APU in an off-road series hybrid electric vehicle and a road test was conducted. The road test results showed the APU control system promised good performance in both vehicle dynamics and vehicle high voltage system.

Cooperative Estimation of Road Grade Based on Multidata Fusion for Vehicle Platoon with Optimal Energy Consumption

2020-04-14
2020-01-0586
The platooning of connected automated vehicles (CAV) possesses the significant potential of reducing energy consumption in the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). Moreover, with the rapid development of eco-driving technology, vehicle platooning can further enhance the fuel efficiency by optimizing the efficiency of the powertrain. Since road grade is a main factor that affects the energy consumption of a vehicle, the estimation of the road grade with high accuracy is the key factor for a connected vehicle platoon to optimize energy consumption using vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication. Commonly, the road grade is quantified by single consumer grade global positioning system (GPS) with the geodetic height data which is rough and in the meter-level, increasing the difficulty of precisely estimating the road grade.

Cooperative Ramp Merging Control for Connected and Automated Vehicles

2020-02-24
2020-01-5020
Traffic congestions are increasingly severe in urban areas, especially at the merging areas of the ramps and the arterial roads. Because of the complex conflict relationship of the vehicles in ramps and arterial roads in terms of time-spatial constraints, it is challenging to coordinate the motion of these vehicles, which may easily cause congestions at the merging areas. The connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) provides potential opportunities to solve this problem. A centralized merging control method for CAVs is proposed in this paper, which can organize the traffic movements in merging areas efficiently and safely. In this method, the merging control model is built to formulate the vehicle coordination problem in merging areas, which is then transformed to the discrete nonlinear optimization form. A simulation model is built to verify the proposed method.

2018-01-5025
Due to the potential on decreasing fuel consumption and design flexibility, parallel configurations are widely used for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). However, the fuel economy and economic profitability of parallel HEVs for heavy-duty truck applications under Chinese driving conditions still need to be investigated. It is uneasy to improve the fuel economy of parallel HEVs with a single electric motor from control perspective only. In this article, the battery size of the architecture is optimized by using the dynamic programming (DP) approach, based on a dynamic degradation model of the LiFePO4 battery. Moreover, based on the DP results, a near-optimal control strategy of the hybrid powertrain system for online application is proposed. Finally, with two economic assumptions, the initial costs, operation costs, and payback periods are obtained in a total cost of ownership framework perspective.

2006-10-31
2006-01-3571
The new control algorithm for parallel hybrid electric vehicle is presented systematically, in which engine operation points are limited within higher efficient area by the control algorithm and the state of charge (SOC) is limited in a range in order to enhance the batteries' charging and discharging efficiency. In order to determine the ideal operating point of the vehicle's engine, the control strategy uses a lookup table to determine the torque output of the engine. The off-line simulation model of parallel HEV power train is developed which includes the control system and controlled objective (such as engine, electric motor, battery pack and so on). The results show that the control algorithm can effectively limite engine and battery operation points and much more fuel economy can be achieved than that of conventional one.

2017-01-0432
Adaptive cruise control system with lane change assistance (LCACC) is a novel advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), which enables dual-target tracking, safe lane change, and longitudinal ride comfort. To design the personalized LCACC system, one of the most important prerequisites is to identify the driver’s individualities. This paper presents a real-time driver behavior characteristics identification strategy for LCACC system. Firstly, a driver behavior data acquisition system was established based on the driver-in-the-loop simulator, and the behavior data of different types of drivers were collected under the typical test condition. Then, the driver behavior characteristics factor Ks we proposed, which combined the longitudinal and lateral control behaviors, was used to identify the driver behavior characteristics. And an individual safe inter-vehicle distances field (ISIDF) was established according to the identification results.

2018-04-03
2018-01-0033
Due to growing interest in automated driving, the need for better understanding of human driving behavior in uncertain environment, such as driving behavior at un-signalized crossroad and roundabout, has further increased. Driving behavior at roundabout is greatly influenced by different dynamic factors such as speed, distance and circulating flow of the potentially conflicting vehicles, and drivers should choose whether to leave or wait at the upcoming exit according to these factors. In this paper, the influential dynamic factors and driving behavior characteristics at the roundabout is analyzed in detail, random forest method is then deployed to predict the driving behavior. For training the driving behavior model, four typical roundabout layouts were created under a real-time driving simulator with PanoSim-RT and dSPACE. Traffic participants with different motion style were also set in the simulation platform to mimic real driving conditions.

2023-01-0587
Driving assistance system is regarded as an effective method to improve driving safety and comfort and is widely used in automobiles. However, due to the different driving styles of different drivers, their acceptance and comfort of driving assistance systems are also different, which greatly affects the driving experience. The key to solving the problem is to let the system understand the driving style and achieve humanization or personalization. This paper focuses on clustering and identification of different driving styles. In this paper, based on the driver's real vehicle experiment, a driving data acquisition platform was built, meanwhile driving conditions were set and drivers were recruited to collect driving information. In order to facilitate the identification of driving style, the correlation analysis of driving features is conducted and the principal component analysis method is used to reduce the dimension of driving features.

2020-01-0865
Batteries are exposed to dynamic load during vehicle driving. It is significant to clarify the load input of the battery system during vehicle driving for battery pack structural design and optimization. Currently, bolt connection is mostly applied for battery pack constraint to vehicle, as well as for module assembly inside the pack. However, accurate bolt load is always difficult to obtain, while directly force measurement is expensive and time consuming in engineering. In this paper, a precise data driven model based on Elman neural network is established to identify the dynamic bolt loads of the battery pack, using tested acceleration data near bolts. The dynamic bolt force data is measured at the same time with the acceleration data during vehicle running in different driving conditions, utilizing customized bolt force sensors.

Effect of Ash on Gasoline Particulate Filter Using an Accelerated Ash Loading Method

2018-04-03
2018-01-1258
Gasoline particulate filter (GPF) is considered a suitable solution to meet the increasingly stringent particle number (PN) regulations for both gasoline direct injection (GDI) and multi-port fuel injection (MPI) engines. Generally, GDI engines emit more particulate matter (PM) and PN. In recent years, GDI engines have gained significant market penetration in the automobile industry owing to better fuel economy and drivability. In this study, an accelerated ash loading method was tested by doping lubricating oil into the fuel for a GDI engine. Emission tests were performed at different ash loads with different driving cycles and GPF combinations. The results showed that the GPF could significantly reduce particle emissions to meet the China 6 regulation. With further ash loading, the filtration efficiency increased above 99% and the effects on fuel consumption and backpressure were found to be limited, even with an ash loading of up to 50 g/l.

2017-01-2247
Gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines have been developed rapidly in recent years, driven by stringent legislative requirements on vehicle fuel efficiency and emissions. However, one challenge facing GDI is the formation of particulate emissions, particularly with the presence of injector tip deposits. The Chinese market features some gasoline fuels that contain no detergent additives and are prone to deposit formation, which can affect engine performance and emissions. The use of detergent additives to mitigate the formation of injector deposits in a GDI engine was investigated in this study by testing a 1.5L turbocharged GDI engine available in the Chinese market. The engine was operated both on base gasoline and on gasoline dosed with detergent additives to evaluate the effect on injector deposit formation and engine performance and emissions.

Effect of Oil and Gasoline Properties on Pre-Ignition and Super-Knock in a Thermal Research Engine (TRE) and an Optical Rapid Compression Machine (RCM)

2016-04-05
2016-01-0720
High boost and direct injection are effective ways for energy saving in gasoline engines. However, the occurrence of super-knock at high load has become a main obstacle for further improving power density and fuel economy. It has been known that super-knock can be induced by pre-ignition, and oil droplet auto-ignition is found to be one of the possible mechanisms. In this study, experiments were conducted in a single-cylinder thermal research engine (TRE), in which different types of oil and surrogates were directly injected into the cylinder and then led to pre-ignition and super-knock. The effect of oil injection timing, oil injection quantity, different gasoline and different oil were tested. All the oil in this work could induce pre-ignition, even though their combustion phasing was much later than that in the case of n-hexadecane.

Energetic Macroscopic Representation Based Energy Management Strategy for Hybrid Electric Vehicle Taking into Account Demand Power Optimization

2017-10-08
2017-01-2208
To further explore the potential of fuel economy for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), a methodology of demand power optimization is proposed. The fuel consumption depends not only on the EMS, but also on the way to operate vehicle. A control strategy to adjust driver’s demand before power splitting is necessary. To get accurate and reliable control strategy, two aspects are the most important. First, a rigorous and organized modeling approach is a base to describe complicated powertrain system of HEV. The energetic macroscopic representation (EMR) is a graphical synthetic description of electromechanical conversion system based on energy flow. A powertrain architecture of HEV is described explicitly via the EMR. Second, the effectiveness of EMS and the reasonability of driving operations are vital.

Estimation of Tire-road Friction Limit with Low Lateral Excitation Requirement Using Intelligent Tire

2023-04-11
2023-01-0755
Tire-road friction condition is crucial to the safety of vehicle driving. The emergence of autonomous driving makes it more important to estimate the friction limit accurately and at the lowest possible excitation. In this paper, an early detection method of tire-road friction coefficient based on pneumatic trail under cornering conditions is proposed using an intelligent tire system. The previously developed intelligent tire system is based on a triaxial accelerometer mounted on the inner liner of the tire tread. The friction estimation scheme utilizes the highly sensitive nature of the pneumatic trail to the friction coefficient even in the linear region and its approximately linear relationship with the excitation level. An indicator referred as slip degree indicating the utilization of the road friction is proposed using the information of pneumatic trail, and it is used to decide whether the excitation is sufficient to adopt the friction coefficient estimate.

Fuel Economy Analysis of Periodic Cruise Control Strategies for Power-Split HEVs at Medium and Low Speed

2018-04-03
2018-01-0871
Hybridization of vehicles is considered as the most promising technology for automakers and researchers, facing the challenge of optimizing both the fuel economy and emission of the road transport. Extensive studies have been performed on power-split hybrid electric vehicles (PS-HEVs). Despite of the fact that their excellent fuel economy performance in city driving conditions has been witnessed, a bottle neck for further improving the fuel economy of PS-HEVs has been encountered due to the inherent engine-generator-motor power circulation of the power-split system under medium-low speed cruising scenarios. Due to the special mechanical constraints of the power-split device (PSD), the conventional periodic cruising strategy like Pulse and Glide cannot be applied to PS-HEVs directly.

Game-Theoretic Lane-Changing Decision-Making Methods for Highway On-ramp Merging Considering Driving Styles

2024-04-09
2024-01-2327
Driver's driving style has a great impact on lane changing behavior, especially in scenarios such as freeway on-ramps that contain a strong willingness to change lanes, both in terms of inter-vehicle interactions during lane changing and in terms of the driving styles of the two vehicles. This paper proposes a study on game-theoretic decision-making for lane-changing on highway on-ramps considering driving styles, aiming to facilitate safer and more efficient merging while adequately accounting for driving styles. Firstly, the six features proposed by the EXID dataset of lane-changing vehicles were subjected to Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and the three principal components after dimensionality reduction were extracted, and then clustered according to the principal components by the K-means algorithm. The parameters of lane-changing game payoffs are computed based on the clustering centers under several styles.

Global Off-Road Path Planning of Unmanned Ground Vehicles Based on the Raw Remote Sensing Map

2023-04-11
2023-01-0699
Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) has a wide range of applications in the military, agriculture, firefighting and other fields. Path planning, as a key aspect of autonomous driving technology, plays an essential role for UGV to accomplish the established driving tasks. At present, there are many global path planning algorithms in grid maps on unstructured roads, while general grid maps do not consider the specific elevation or ground type difference of each grid, and unstructured roads are generally considered as flat and open roads. On the contrary, the unmanned off-road is always a bumpy road with undulating terrain, and meanwhile, the landform is complex and the types of features are diverse. In order to ensure the safety and improve the efficiency of autonomous driving of UGV in off-road environment, this paper proposes a global off-road path planning method for UGV based on the raw image of remote sensing map. Firstly, the raw image is gridded.
